Every week someone asks me whether they should run Facebook ads or Google ads. Usually they have heard that one of them "does not work" from a friend, and they want to avoid wasting money.
Both platforms work. They just do very different jobs. Once you understand that difference, the choice becomes much easier, and you stop judging one platform by the standards of the other.
The one difference that matters most
Google Ads captures demand. Someone already has a problem and types it into Google. "AC repair Rawalpindi." "Best IELTS academy Islamabad." Your ad appears right when they are looking for a solution.
Facebook and Instagram ads create demand. Nobody opens Instagram to search for a dentist. They are scrolling, and your ad interrupts them with something interesting enough to stop for. You are reaching people before they start looking, sometimes before they know they need you.
That one idea explains most of the differences in cost, results and strategy between the two.

When Google Ads is the better choice
Choose Google first if people already search for what you sell. That includes most local services in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, such as clinics, lawyers, repair services, schools, property and home services. It also includes B2B services that buyers actively research, and ecommerce products people search for by name.
Google is also stronger for urgent needs. Nobody waits to see a Facebook ad when their water pipe bursts. They search.
The trade off is that clicks can be more expensive, and if nobody searches for your product yet, there is little demand to capture. I explain how click costs work in my guide on what Google Ads costs in Pakistan.
When Facebook and Instagram are the better choice
Choose Meta first if your product is visual, new, or the kind of thing people buy on impulse. Clothing, beauty, food, home decor, events, courses and consumer gadgets often do very well. So do offers that need explaining, where a short video can show what a search ad never could.
Meta is also strong in Pakistan for businesses that sell through conversation. Click to WhatsApp ads let people message you straight from the ad, and many customers prefer that to filling in a form.
The trade off is that leads can be less ready to buy, so qualifying and quick follow up matter a lot. My Meta Ads service page explains how I protect lead quality.
What about cost?
Facebook clicks are often cheaper than Google clicks, but that comparison can mislead you. A cheap click from someone casually scrolling is not the same as an expensive click from someone searching "buy" right now.
The number that matters is cost per customer, not cost per click. It is common for Google to cost several times more per click and still produce customers more cheaply, because the people clicking are ready to buy. The opposite happens too, when a strong Instagram offer beats search on every measure.
The only way to know for your business is to track leads and sales properly on both platforms and compare like with like.
The best answer for most businesses: both, in the right order
Once a business has a working budget, I rarely recommend only one platform. They support each other:
- Start with the platform closest to your buyers. Google for searched services, Meta for visual or new products.
- Add remarketing. Show ads on Facebook and Instagram to people who visited your site from Google but did not convert.
- Use Meta to grow demand. As more people learn about you through social, more of them later search your brand name on Google, which is usually your cheapest traffic.
- Judge each platform by its role. Do not cut Meta just because it shows fewer direct sales if it is feeding your Google brand searches.
A quick way to decide
Ask yourself one question: "Do people already search for what I sell?"
- If yes, start with Google Ads.
- If no, or if your product sells best when people see it, start with Meta Ads or TikTok Ads.
- If you are not sure, open Google Keyword Planner and check whether your main keywords get searches in your area. That data usually settles it.
Frequently asked questions
Are Facebook ads cheaper than Google ads?
Clicks are often cheaper on Facebook and Instagram, but cost per customer is what matters. Google clicks cost more because the people searching are usually closer to buying.
Which is better for a small business in Pakistan?
It depends on whether people search for your product or service. Local service businesses usually do better on Google first. Visual products and businesses that sell through WhatsApp often do better on Meta first.
Can I run Facebook and Google ads at the same time?
Yes, and once your budget allows, it is usually the best approach. Google captures active searches, while Meta builds interest and retargets visitors who did not convert.
How much should I spend to test each platform?
Enough to get meaningful data, which depends on your costs per click and conversion rate. I usually suggest a fixed test budget over four to six weeks for each platform before making a decision.
Which platform gives better quality leads?
Google search leads are usually more ready to act, because the person was actively looking. Meta leads can be just as good when the offer is clear, the form asks a qualifying question and your team follows up quickly. For help choosing, call or WhatsApp me on 0343 5853835.
